When you enter the dental office of Dr. Michaela McKenzie, you will notice a different feel. We cater to patients who are really focused on a more holistic and naturally healthy lifestyle. We offer only organic based products and a metal free, and fluoride free array of dental materials.

Dr. McKenzie was the first dentist to bring all-ceramic dental implants to the state of Georgia. The all-ceramic implants come from Switzerland and have been used in Europe for many years. Dr. McKenzie trained under the German dentist – Dr. Ralf Luettmann, the Chief Science Officer (CSO), who went to Switzerland and designed all the prototypes for the Z-Systems, Inc. or Zirkolith Implants.

She was trained to place the implants under Dr. Sammy Noumbissi – one of the pioneers of ceramic implant placement surgery and the founder of the IAOCI – the International Academy of Ceramic Implantology.

All-white ceramic implants are made of zirconia, which makes them very strong and they look beautiful and natural. The reason Dr. McKenzie likes them is that the ceramic is not only white and therefore esthetic, but also the zirconia ceramic is biocompatible with the body.

The threads on the implants are laser micro etched to mimic the topography of natural bone, which allows better integration into the body. Bone grows into them and gum tissue grows over them. The chemical configuration of the Zirconia material creates a self-repair mechanism which makes it highly resistant to cracks and fractures.

In addition, Dr. McKenzie has a 3D Milling machine from Germany in the office that can mill an all ceramic crown while the patient waits. This provides her patients with a beautiful, all-natural ceramic implant and ceramic crown that can be placed in the office.

Tips on Proper Teeth and Gum Care

It is essential that patients take good care of their smile for a number of reasons. First, it keeps the smile looking its best. Second, it can keep cavities from eating away at the exterior and interior of a tooth, causing possible infection to the dental pulp. Third, it can greatly reduce the risk of issues such as periodontal disease. Dr. Michaela McKenzie of Dazzling Smiles inAtlanta, Georgiais committed to educating her patients on the advantages of proper oral health care.

Below are several tips for proper teeth and gum care to maintain a healthy smile:

  • Brushing the teeth – brushing the teeth should be done after every meal, or at least twice a day. This is the best way to remove plaque, which harbors harmful bacteria that produce acid. Acid can cause tooth decay, so removing plaque as soon as possible is desirable to keep problems at bay.
  • Flossing – flossing is often overlooked but can be great in removing plaque from between teeth. It can also remove food particles, which may be stuck in the teeth and become problematic. Flossing can be done after every meal, or at least once a day.
  • Eating right – it is important to avoid snacks that have a lot of starches and sugars because these produce the most acids in the mouth. This includes hard candies, which can be in the mouth for an extended time and contribute to problems such as cavities and periodontal disease. Patients should maintain a healthy diet and reduce their snacks, avoiding foods such as candies, cake, pie, sugary gums, and chips.
  • Visiting the dentist – to maintain healthy teeth and gums, patients are encouraged to visit their dentist at least twice a year for recall appointments. During these check-ups, patients can undergo a thorough examination and professional cleaning. The dentist can check for any concerns at this time, and may even take x-rays to check for signs of decay and infection beyond what can be seen with the human eye.

Dr. Michaela McKenzie of Dazzling Smiles works closely with new and existing patients to ensure they have healthy oral care habits and understand the importance of maintaining a healthy smile for life!

Professional Teeth Whitening vs. Teeth Whitening at Home

A brighter, whiter smile is the epitome of a healthy mouth. Patients who are experiencing dulling or yellowing of their smiles may be worried about the impression they are giving others. Dr. Michaela McKenzie and the team at Dazzling Smiles in Atlanta believe that patients should have access to whitening solutions. However, many patients are well aware that their local drugstore offers teeth whitening treatments in the oral health care aisle. This is when men and women ask about professional teeth whitening vs. teeth whitening at home.

Some feel as though hiring a professional to whiten their teeth is just an extravagant, unnecessary expense. However, those who have had bleaching done by their dentist are highly satisfied with the results. This is because the treatment is done with stronger bleach and done under the supervision of a dentist. Dr. Michaela McKenzie sees many patients in her practice who have used over-the-counter whitening products and have been unhappy with the results. They visit her practice to learn about professional teeth whitening methods.

At the practice of Dr. Michaela McKenzie, patients can enjoy either in-office power bleaching or take-home whitening kits. They are able to address surface and deep staining of the tooth enamel that may otherwise be difficult to reduce with conventional home whitening kits from the drugstore. Patients will also have their teeth thoroughly cleaned before they whiten their smile to ensure the best possible results. Our whitening solutions are stronger, more effective, and longer lasting than anything that is available over-the-counter, allowing patients to get a great return on investment when they choose professional teeth whitening options.

Are you interested in learning more about the differences between professional teeth whitening services vs. teeth whitening products from the drugstore? Contact Dr. Michaela McKenzie to educate yourself further on what sets professional whitening apart from the less effective solutions used by many patients at home. She provides teeth whitening and many other cosmetic dentistry solutions that men and women can use to dramatically enhance their appearance and enjoy sharing their smiles with others.

An Alternative to Conventional Removable Dentures – Teeth in a Day

When patients hear of conventional removable dentures, their grandparents’ teeth in a glass of water often come to mind. However, dentures have come a long way over the years, and now patients can enjoy an alternative to these restorations: teeth in a day!

Teeth in a day is a special technique that uses dental implants and a special bridge-like denture that is placed over the implants. Teeth in a day is done in one appointment, allowing patients to avoid the long timeframes often necessary for the traditional denture process. Dr. Michaela McKenzie and the team at Dazzling Smiles can provide patients with this method to achieve a more beautiful smile faster!

Teeth in a day is perfect for patients who have sufficient bone structure and will see success with the placement of the dental implants. Dental implants are metal posts that are placed into the bone and they can provide a stable foundation for these special types of dentures. What’s great about teeth in a day is that patients are not toothless for any length of time. They can come in, have any necessary teeth extracted, and then have their implants and restorations placed at the same time. Patients leave with their brand new smile and the confidence they’ve been wanting!

Patients who are considering teeth in a day will want to visit our team to determine if they are proper candidates. Candidates are individuals who have good bone support for the implants. Candidates can speak to our team about sedation during the procedure, if desired. All of this can be discussed during a consultation appointment.

Evidence supporting a link between dental amalgams and chronic illness, fatigue, depression, anxiety, and suicide.

Dr. Michaela McKenzie of Dazzling Smiles believes in providing her patients with dental care that is biocompatible with the body and allows them to enjoy the benefits of a beautiful smile and good medical health. This is why she educates her patients fully on the disadvantages of traditional dental procedures such as silver amalgam fillings.

Silver amalgam fillings have been studied more recently because of the concern of mercury content. Most fillings have a mercury content of approximately 50%. This means that half of the makeup of these fillings is with mercury—a neurotoxin that has been known for years to be toxic to the human body. This is because when it heats up, it releases vapors that can affect the body. Heating can occur during chewing, brushing the teeth, and even enjoying a warm beverage. Each time this happens, more and more mercury affects the body.

Dr. Michaela McKenzie has even seen continued evidence through scientific studies that shows that silver amalgam fillings have been linked to the development of chronic illnesses, anxiety, fatigue, depression, and even suicide. This is why she does not place silver amalgam fillings and instead suggests composite resin fillings.

There are several benefits of composite resin fillings over traditional silver amalgam fillings. First off, they are safe. They are made of biocompatible materials that cannot harm the human body. Second, composite resin fillings are more aesthetic. The material is made to match the natural color of the tooth enamel for seamless integration with the smile. Many patients love being able to smile, laugh, and talk with others without their fillings showing. Third, composite resin fillings do not expand and contract with heat and cold like metal fillings do, reducing the likelihood of bacteria getting into the tooth.

If you want to find out more about silver amalgam fillings and how they negatively affect the smile, now is a great time to schedule a consultation appointment with Dr. Michaela McKenzie of Dazzling Smiles. She can educate you on the advantages of placing composite resin fillings as well as the benefits of having silver amalgam fillings replaced.

Curing Tooth Decay

At Dazzling Smiles, we encourage patients to take into consideration the many ways they can improve the health and wellness of their smiles. Preventative care is always a key component. Brushing and flossing the teeth after every meal can keep problems such as disease and decay at bay, as well as regular visits to the dental office for examinations and deep cleanings. However, many patients are skeptical when their dentist tells them that the can cure tooth decay.

Tooth decay can be reversed through remineralization. Remineralization can be achieved with a change in diet. This has been touted as an effective way to naturally reverse tooth decay in the book “Cure Tooth Decay” by Ramiel Nagel. This doctor had continual issues with his daughter’s tooth decay and researched the reversal of her condition with changes to her diet. His findings were consistent with those of Dr. Weston A. Price, another dentist who has pictures and research that show how diet is linked with improvements (or negative impacts) in oral health. Other doctors, such as Dr. May Mellanby and authors Stephan Guyenet have also done extensive research on the formation of teeth and bones and how dietary changes can help.

There are three identifying factors to determine if enamel will grow and remineralize due to the dietary changes. Mineral content of the diet must be taken into consideration, including fat-soluble vitamin content (Vitamin D specifically) and the availability of minerals for absorption through phytic acid content.

With these ideas it mind, it is important to create a diet that hits these strong points in order to ensure the reversal of tooth decay:

  • Diets low in phytic acid (preferably a grain-free diet or one low in grains)
  • Diets high in animal fats with fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K. These include foods such as butter, liver, organ meats, eggs, cod liver oil, and seafood.
  • Diets high in vegetables, cooked or raw
  • Diets with fruits in moderations as they contain natural sugars
  • Diets with regular, preferably daily intake of cod liver oil
  • Diets with no processed foods or sugars

Are Your Mercury Fillings Causing Candida?

Dr. Michaela McKenzie of Dazzling Smiles is a dentist who understands that there is a connection between the health of the smile and the rest of the body. This is known as the oral systemic connection. Patients who have periodontal disease are putting themselves at risk for a myriad of other medical problems. However, there are other links to the mouth that many patients may not be aware of. This is the link between silver amalgam fillings and yeast, also known as candida.

Candida is a year that resides in the body in small amounts that can be beneficial. However, when there is too much of it, it can break down the walls of the intestines and release unwanted toxins into the body. These toxins are linked to many health conditions, and may result in problems such as a white coated tongue, bad breath, poor digestion, and “brain fog.”

Yeast can overgrow in the body due to many factors, but if patients have silver amalgam fillings, this may be the first suspect. This is because these fillings contain up to 50% mercury. Mercury can be released when the filling is heated, which can occur during brushing or chewing. This causes the mercury to accumulate in the body. This neurotoxin can become a serious problem in the body and can affect the immune system, nervous system, and endocrine system. Mercury exposure has also been linked to children with lower IQs as it can affect the brain.

Mercury is pro-inflammatory and can result in oxidative stress in the body, destroying the enzymes in the body that are responsible for converting omega-3 fatty acid. This is important for good health and a balance in the proper conditions to keep candida from flourishing.

Patients who are experiencing oral issues that may indicate an overgrowth of yeast may want to speak to Dr. Michaela McKenzie of Dazzling Smiles about an examination to discuss the possibility of replacing mercury fillings if they are responsible for the condition. Our practice offers composite resin fillings which are not only healthier for the body as a whole, but also more aesthetic.
